I WRITE in response to the Barkly MLA’s puff piece (“MLA offers ‘the truth’ about SIHIP project”, TDT 21/8/09) where he made many assertions.
Firstly I would like to point out that Indigenous affairs being at the forefront of the political debate is positive, especially when it is holding to account the poor performance of the service delivery by your tired and arrogant government.
It is time that lazy Labor is held to account over it’s complete compulsion to take Aboriginal votes but deliver little, no or poor services; no strategic direction; and an unwillingness to make tough decisions to bring about change.
Held to account should be your government’s reluctance to support the intervention and grow it.
The biggest failures of the intervention have been the lack of your tired government’s ability to respond to economic growth opportunities throughout the regions to provide jobs to locals to compliment some of the harsher measures such as welfare quarantining.
Of course these matters should be political, so to should your lack of voice in doing something about it.
Secondly, your assertion that a cobbled together agreement to save Paul Henderson’s political skin provides stability for the Territory couldn’t be further from the truth.
This agreement simply keeps Paul Henderson in power, it is not an agreement with Labor, nor the ‘government’, it is with Paul Henderson only.
While this agreement pork-barrels the electorate of Nelson, home of Gerry Wood, it does nothing to solve the problems of land release in the Territory, no vision to build economic development, still forgetting about addressing the issues of chronic alcoholics through rehabilitation (remember the rehab centre funds were taken out of Tennant Creek by your Government) and it doesn’t build tourism in the Barkly.
Nowhere is there mention of improving bush services to Alice, ensuring trains arrive in daylight hours, open up Tennant Creek airport to greater services.
Your arrogant Labor Government still hasn’t built a bridge over the MacArthur River, something that was promised in 2001 – eight tired long Labor years ago.
Finally, your ignorance is shown in your statement regarding the Strategic Indigenous Housing Infrastructure Program (SIHIP).
Let me advise you that SIHIP was to be a five-year program delivering new houses, replacement houses, refurbishments and essential infrastructure such as power, sewer and waters upgrades along with subdivisions.
Unfortunately due to your government’s incompetence in managing SIHIP the 230 replacement houses will now not be replaced and essential service infrastructure will not be completed.
So communities will now miss out on power upgrades subdivisions and sewer reconstructions.
Even more worrying is that to complete the program your government will now have to raid a future housing program to pay.
That is you will raid the National Partnership Program on Remote Indigenous Housing which is supposed to run from 2013 to 2018 to the value of $1.7B.
This is more taxpayer dollars you will raid as a result of Labor incompetence.
It appears that the wheels have come off this tired and arrogant government.
