Spakatak reigns again at TC Cup

15/08/2008 11:02:00 AM
IT was a case of déjà vu for popular Alice Springs trainer Kevin Lamprecht at the Tennant Creek Turf Club’s meeting at Hagan Park on Saturday.

For the second year in succession, Lamprecht – a former resident of Tennant Creek who always supports the club’s meetings with a good number of starters – saddled up four of the five winners, and provided a jockey with a treble of wins.

Last year the lucky rider was Michael McDuff, while this time it was Darwin-based Vanessa Arnott who benefitted, guiding Sitar, Performance and Spakatak to consecutive wins in races three, four and five.

Lamprecht brought less runners to the Carlton Mid Tennant Creek Cup meeting than he normally does – just eight compared to 11 last year – but had no trouble continuing his remarkable love affair with the course.

He wasted no time in getting the ball rolling when Paul Denton kept up his unbeaten record on Expenditure in the day’s opener, the Noble’s Nob Class 1 Handicap.

Expenditure proved too strong for his stablemate Swayhere (Arnott) over the 1000m, winning by three-quarters of a-length. Pacemaker Snoop weakened to third.

Denton recalled that he had only ridden Expenditure once previously, for a win in Darwin just over 12 months ago.

Danericane, trained and co-owned by George Cooke, who races the five-year-old with his wife Denise, provided South Australian rider Ben Hoppo with a win on his first ride at Hagan Park when he got the better of the Lamprecht-trained Heza Pocket Rocket (Arnott) in the Peko Mines Class B Handicap.

Hoppo had his mount trailing the leader Takalua from the outset, and challenged hard in the home straight for a hard-fought half-length win. Takalua took third a length and a-quarter behind Heza Pocket Rocket.

The Warrego Mine 0-62 Handicap, the third race on the card, was Arnott’s cue to hit top gear. Like Hoppo, she was riding at Tennant Creek for the first time and after a pair of seconds, greeted the judge aboard impressive six-length winner Sitar, who proved far too good for favourite Star Signs and Latin Desire.

She wasted little time in repeating the dose, this time aboard course specialist Performance in the El Dorado Mine 0-76 Handicap.

Performance has now had three starts on the course for three wins, although he had to pull out all the stops to down Marzotto (Hoppo) by three-quarters of a-length. Lagoon, a stablemate of the winner, took third five lengths away.

The feature event, worth some $17,500, attracted a competitive field of five runners, but it was Spakatak who made it back-to-back wins in the feature event over 1600m.

After he was slowly into stride, Spakatak was allowed to find his feet by Arnott as Palmyra Boy took over in front from Frosty Boy.

Arnott allowed her mount to improve along the inner approaching the home turn and after a good battle with the pacemaker and The Tailer, got home best over the final stages to win by a length from Palmyra Boy.

Spakatak, like Performance, has a great record at Hagan Park – he boasts three wins and a second from just four starts – and took his stake earnings over the $100,000 mark with his latest win for Alice Springs owner, Bob Forster.

A crowd of in excess of 350 enjoyed an excellent day’s racing, run in fine, breezy weather.
