Shooters prepare for pistol championships

31 Jul, 2009 10:14 AM
THE Tennant Creek Pistol Club is hosting the Pistol NT State Championships this weekend from 1-3 August 2009.

Some 30 shooters from the NT, Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales will compete in 13 different events over the three days, with those competing for the Iron Man title having to shoot 11 matches that include the five Olympic/International matches, four Service matches, and two Black Powder matches.

Local members have been busy preparing the range facilities and a few practising their skills in preparation for winning a championship trophy or grade placing.

Matches will start at 9am each day and members of the public are welcome to come and watch the competition.

A canteen will be open with food and drink available. We are located five kilometres along Warrego road.

Look for the street sign and turn right through the white gates.

Please respect that smoking is not permitted inside the range area, mobile phones must be turned off, and flash photography is not permitted.

During July a few personal best scores were shot and a double grade break occurred when Renato Guartico shot a magnificent score of 540/600 in Sport Pistol, surpassing his previous best of 486 by some 54 points and leaving D Grade to enter B Grade.

Yours Truly slipped over the border to Winton, QLD, to compete in my first open competition and managed to clean up with first in B Grade Air Pistol and B Grade Centre-fire, second in B Grade Standard Pistol and first for AA Grade and overall winner in 100m Rim-fire Silhouette Pistol, despite it being the first time I have ever shot the match.

Scores for July matches are:

Standard Pistol: Jim Cruise 512, Robin Small 489, Renato Guartico 487, Dee Yu 479, Terry Hobbs 467, Karen Shiell 441, Russell O’Donnell 415, Wendy Vismans 395. Charmaine Taylor (2 hands) 444.

Congratulations to Renato and Dee for personal best scores.
