A TENNANT Creek shooter has just returned from the Clay Target NT State Olympic Titles in Darwin where he qualified fourth in one of two sections.
Keven Stout (pictured) entered both the Olympic Trap and the Olympic Double Trap at the event which attracted shooters from throughout the Territory as well as Queensland and South Australia.
Shooting 50 pairs, Stout finished fourth and was one of the top six to go to the finals where he held his position.
The winner was Darwin shooter, Victor Verteklise.
The top three winners will attend the National Titles as Territory representatives and Stout will travel with the team as the first reserve.
He says he intends to compete as an individual at the event to be held in Brisbane next January if he isn’t required in the team.
For someone who took up the sport for ‘something to do on weekends’, Stout has done remarkably well.
Twelve years ago, he went along to a gun club event with a friend.
“That was the first time I’d tried the sport and immediately I was hooked,” he said.
“I used to be into speedway, but I got too old and had too many injuries so I had to give it up.
“Shooting has proved to be something which suits me well.”
Stout says he’s honoured to have competed against Olympic gold medallist Russell Marks and Commonwealth Gold medallist, Dianne Reeves as well as teams from Lebanon, Malaysia, New Zealand and America.
“It has opened up a whole new world,” he said.
“I’ve met people from all over the globe and have made lots of new friends.
“And it’s a good recreational activity.”
Stout is humble about his achievements, but his boxes of medals and trophies let the cat out of the bag.
He’s actually really good at what he does.
Having won three Queensland state titles, two NT state titles and about 50 club championships in NSW, Qld and NT, it’s clear he’s a straight shooter.
Stout even represented the Northern Territory at the Skeet Nationals at Wagga Wagga in 2007 where he made the top 25 in the national handicap.
Now working in Tennant Creek for Phillips Earthmoving, Stout has been elected as president of the Tennant Creek Gun Club which meets each fortnight at the range on Peko Road.
He says new members and visitors are always welcome and urges anyone interested to come along.
And who knows where such an invitation might lead?
After all, Stout only went along for something to do.
