Darts teen on target to become next champion

10 Feb, 2012 09:41 AM
A TENNANT Creek teenager is right on target to become an Australian darts champion after his recent success at a national competition.

Fifteen-year-old Jackson Wilson-Young recorded the second-highest average at the Australian Junior Darts Championships held in Tasmania recently.

His average was 23.398 which, according to his coach, is very impressive.

President of the NT Darts Association and coach, Chippy Miller, said the average meant Jackson had to be hitting more than 60 points every time he walked up to the board.

“Jackson averaged what top seniors score in some games,” he said.

“He’s good alright.

“Jackson is definitely the Territory’s best junior player by far and he’ll go a long way, for sure.

“Even though he’s still young, Jackson is a mature player who is dedicated and passionate about the game.

“He’s also prepared to put in the work needed to get to the top.”

While the highest-scorer of the recent championships went on to be selected as the Australian junior representative, he’s in his last year as a junior player which paves the way for Jackson to take the crown next year.

He thinks he’ll be in with a good chance.

“It’s my big dream to represent Australia,” Jackson said.

“I think I could get the highest score next year especially if I work hard on practice this year.”

The Darts World Cup, which is a biennial event, is scheduled for next year and Jackson is determined to be in Canada as Australia’s junior representative.

Chippy has faith in his ability.

“The way he’s going, I reckon he could well be our player,” he said.

“The darts officials have their eyes on Jackson because he’s seen as one of the most promising junior darts player in the country.

“I’ve taken him away to tournaments a number of times and he has always risen to the challenge.

“It’s not only about how well you play darts, it’s also about how you conduct yourself as a sportsman and in social situations.

“Jackson always does very well.

“We’re very proud of him.”
