Charity bike ride raises funds for Christmas event

23 Oct, 2009 09:19 AM
IT was a fantastic turnout for the 2009 Col Bremner Charity Bike Ride from Tennant Creek to Wauchope.

Five solo riders, four teams and 25 kids took part in the annual event which this year raised funds for the Tennant Creek Children’s Christmas Tree.

Riders departed at 6:30am.

The early bolter was Beanzy from team Flying Four, also Josh Starick following closely to Beanzy’s wheels.

Then there was the old stages settling into their groove.

By the 15km mark, Beanzy and Josh had dropped behind and Calvin Pomare was setting a cracking pace with Flash just 1km behind.

Greeny, Trin and Rick were closely on the tail.

The field had spread out quite quickly.

The teams were sorting out each other, one minute they were all bunched up then Bridgestone/Lavery team made a break.

Team Central was in the mix then T&J Contractors with the Flying Four bringing up the rear.

Calvin performed a great solo ride by coming in under five hours.

Flash and Rick were head to head at the last 2km mark but Flash pedalled away and beat Rick by 500 metres.

Flash and Rick both made the journey in five hours.

Rick showed some good sportsmanship by waiting for Flash to fix his puncture and catch up at Bonney Wells.

The Bridgestone/Lavery team was the first team in with Central Team not far behind.

T & J Contractors followed, not a bad effort as some of their team had a huge night out.

Trin and Greeny had a great ride and, like Calvin, this was their first attempt riding solo.

The same goes with all the teams, except for T&J Contractors.

The day went really well without any dramas.

The girls weren’t happy when Rick didn’t have the winners top to hand over to Calvin to put on because they wanted to see his ripping muscles.

The Children’s Bike Rde was well attended with around 25 kids.

However, due to some latecomers jumping in on the ride to the railway station, numbers may have been higher.

Thanks to Helen, Alison, Libby and Isabelle for trying to keep the eager young riders safe.

By the end of the race, the two girls probably covered the same distant to Wauchope going backwards and forwards checking the kids.

RAOB Golden Tennant 57 and the committee of the Children’s Christmas Tree would like to thank all the people who supported the bike ride.

Whilst not having all the figures in, it is calculated between $18,000 to $20,000 will be raised which is really fantastic.

You should have seen the joy on Hal Ruger’s face when we informed him of this figure.

We would like to thank the following sponsors: Memorial Club, T & J Contractors, Central Service Station, Wauchope Roadhouse, Tennant Creek Tyre Service, Tennant & District Times, Tennant Creek Porn Stars and Colin Fry for donating the bike to the Bridgestone/Lavery team.

Thank you to all the people who gave up there time to be in support vehicles.

Also a thank you to Sue Adams for being our medical support and all the people who chased their own sponsorship to raise this amount of money.

There are still tickets available for the St Nicholas/Melbourne Cup Sweep.
