A TEACHER who blew the whistle on an asbestos risk at Ali Curung school says he was blacklisted by the Northern Territory Government for his efforts.
Now he has established a website warning others not to come to the Territory to teach.
Dr Robert Bartholemew, who was sent to teach at Ali Curung at the beginning of last year, discovered the school had been built on an asbestos burial site from the 1970s.
Due to weathering, material had surfaced and was scattered throughout the school grounds.
A 2005 report, requested by the then-principal and staff, recommended immediate action to reduce the risk of asbestos exposure, but no action was taken until two months after Dr Bartholemew complained three years later.
Dr Bartholemew also raised other concerns about the school such as student abuse of animals which wandered through the school grounds.
His website features a photo of a dog which died after students kicked it and one of a donkey chasing children who had stabbed it with a sharp stick.
Dr Bartholemew claims that after raising concerns he and his wife were blacklisted by the Department of Education and that, despite applying to dozens of schools across the Territory, they were unsuccessful in securing positions.
He now teaches in New Zealand.
His website: teacherswithintegrity.com which has messages for teachers, parents and indigenous leaders, challenges the Territory’s education department to sue them if any of his claims is untrue.
