Three decades on and the Show is still a star attraction

09 Jul, 2009 10:29 AM
THIS time 30 years ago there was great excitement as the town prepared for the first ever show.

It was the culmination of many years lobbying to have Tennant Creek included in the Territory show circuit and the inaugural show was an outstanding success.

Three decades on and many thousands have enjoyed all the fun of the fair, the fantastic exhibits and the miles of information and products available at the stalls.

Crowds from throughout the region are expected to pour through the gates which open at 8am tomorrow and there will be plenty to amuse them all.

The First Light Entertainment folk will be back with lots of tricks up their sleeves.

You’ll see them stilt walking, juggling, blowing bubbles and working wonders with balloons.

The Funtime Puppet Theatre will be there too with their fabulous Punch and Judy show.

Lots of laughs and plenty of audience interaction ensure this show should not be missed.

Children love the old time favourites which have been amusing audiences for hundreds of years so be sure to call by and join in on the tradition.

Sideshow alley will be popular and will once again feature the famous Bells Amusements rides such as the Cha Cha, Zipper, Thunderbolt as well as the in-high-demand showbag stands.

Dog lovers can enter their much-loved mutts in the Pet Dog Show or simply watch the professionals parade their prized pooches at the Championship Show which attracts entrants from throughout Australia.

This year the dog show is a tribute to Gail and Ian Taylor who were tragically killed in a car accident late last year.

The Taylors were synonymous with the dog show and their presence will be sorely missed by the organisers, competitors and spectators.

There will be a dining area and public bar which is good news for the drinkers because all takeaway outlets are subject to liquor restrictions for the weekend.

The Licensing Commission imposed bans on spirits, cask and fortified wine as well as alcohol in glass containers with the exception of wine and some beers effective for three days from tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health has warned show goers about swine flu and has reminded everyone that good personal hygiene remains the key strategy for reducing the risk of spreading and contracting seasonal or swine flu strains of influenza.

The Department will stage a good health and lifestyle display at the show which will include influenza prevention advice from Centre for Disease Control clinical staff.
