Tennant prisoner escapes from jail

27 Jan, 2012 09:28 AM
A TENNANT Creek man serving time in jail was on the run for just one day after he made a bid for freedom this week.

Michael Binsaris, 22, was one of two prisoners who escaped from Darwin’s Berrimah jail on Monday evening.

He and the other man, Dominic Gurruwiwi, were in the minimum security section of the prison.

They walked out of an unlocked gate into an area for day-release prisoners where fences are not alarmed.

Then they climbed a perimeter security fence - a chain mesh fence topped with barbed wire - and escaped into a nearby paddock at about 6pm.

Security cameras in the zone had been damaged by a lightning a few days earlier.

Both prisoners were apprehended on Tuesday.

Binsaris was found at around 6.20pm at a residence in Karama.

The men have been charged with escape lawful custody.

Meanwhile the Department of Correctional Services have begun an investigation into why the gate was left unsecured.
