PERFORMING on stage brings the bass guitarist of a local rock band to life.
But Christopher Parker from Unbroken Expanse said talking about performing was enough to bring on a bout of stage fright and uncontrollable shakes.
‘‘I’m scared of the stage,’’ he said.
‘‘But when I hear the music, I come alive.
‘‘It flicks a switch, and it’s like I go in to another world.
‘‘People say I’m a different person when I get on stage.’’
The group is one of four NT bands that have been selected to perform at Darwin’s Bass in the Grass.
The Tennant rockers formed in 2007 and have already compiled an extensive list of self-written tracks.
The four male members are not new to the big stage, they were selected to perform at Bass in the Dust in Alice Springs last year.
Parker said they would be upping the ante for their Top End debut.
‘‘It’s definitely the biggest thing we’ve ever done,’’ he said.
‘‘We’re nervous wrecks at the moment, but are practicing every night.
‘‘We are jamming the hell out of it so we can get on stage and do it blindfolded.’’
With just 25 minutes on stage, Unbroken Expanse will be showcasing about seven original tracks.
Parker said it didn’t matter how long they had on stage, just getting a chance to perform was a thrill.
‘‘We’re from Tennant Creek and we would have just been happy to get on stage for one minute,’’ he said.
The Tennant music community has thrown its support behind the fledgling group in traditional style and a convoy of dozens is expected to join the group on the road to Bass in the Grass.
‘‘Everyone has been congratulating us, we are like ambassadors for the town and that’s why we will be rocking out,’’ he said.
‘‘We have got lots of mates coming up to watch us.’’
Parker said the group was serious about their performance and would be taking an entourage including a manager, sound technician and stage crew.
He said keen rockers should not miss the Territory’s premier rock event.
‘‘We are just four young fellas from a small town, coming to the big smoke to rock out,’’ he said.
