Teacher to gain inspiration from Shakespeare program

31 Jul, 2009 10:13 AM
A TENNANT Creek High School teacher is spending this week in Sydney, taking part in the Bell Shakespeare program.

Monica Hilse was one of just 12 teachers selected from Australia’s remote and regional schools to participate in the eminent program which examines several aspects of William Shakespeare including who he was and his works.

She will also be attending Shakespearean performances at the Sydney Opera House.

Tennant Creek High School students have developed a passion for the Bard since they first performed an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet in 2007.

Lungkku and The Rose attracted national, and even international, attention.

Last year students performed the equally-successful Wirnkarra, a localised adaptation of A Midsummers Night Dream which included cultural stories and Aboriginal languages in some scenes.

Ms Hilse is the second teacher from the High School to attend the Bell Shakespeare program.

Kristi Johenson who introduced Tennant students to the Bard, enkindling a lasting passion, attended last year.
