ARTISTS from throughout the Barkly Region have spent the week at Juno experimenting with new techniques and styles.

Hailing from places such as Epenarra, Borroloola, Elliott, Ali Curing, Tennant Creek, Ampilatwatja and Mangalawuru, the artists are attending the second Desart Barkly Region Artists’ Camp.

Workshops included batik and other textile work with art facilitator China de la Vega from Sydney, material preparation with Victor Kuskoff from Colour Square in Melbourne, print making with Suzi Lyon from Charles Darwin University in Alice Springs, artifact making with Junior Frank from Nyinkka Nyunyu and screen printing with the ladies from Julalikari Arts.

Meetings to discuss Indigenous art industry issues such as the Desart Indigenous Artworker training program, the Indigenous Art Commercial Code of Conduct, upcoming Desert Mob events in Alice Springs, the global financial crisis and its effect on the Aboriginal art market marketing and promotions were conducted by Desart Executive Officer John Oster .

Desart Barkly region executive member Maureen O’Keefe from the Arplwe Art and Culture Centre in Ali Curung said “It was really great the way all the artists gathered together and tried out new techniques. We are learning about how to run our art centres.”
