Outdoor performance highlights social issues

3/07/2009 12:20:00 PM
TENNANT Creek Football Oval erupted in a barrage of noisy drums as trio Christina Atkin, Adam Drake and Sam Foster from Zeal Theatre, Gold Coast, began their performance of The Forwards last Saturday.

The Forwards was an outdoor, performance art piece based around football and the social psyche which can accompany the game.

Issues raised throughout the show included binge drinking, drink driving, death and social isolation.

The workshops were presented by Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), through Barkly Regional Arts (BRA).

Two members of Zeal Theatre, who were already conducting workshops with ATYP, thought it would be a good idea to put on a performance to demonstrate a professional example to students.

BRA funded the third actor, Christina Atkin, to come to Tennant Creek to participate in the show.

The night ended in a lively gathering at Fernanda’s where students and musicians played on stage with local artists.
