Minister inspects town camp works

3/07/2009 12:20:00 PM
MINISTER for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, visited Tennant Creek this week to check out progress on the $35 million housing and infrastructure project.

The Northern Territory and Federal Governments struck a deal with Julalikari Council last year to fund the project in return for the sublease of the town’s eight camp areas.

Improvements will include housing upgrades as well as power, water, sewerage and road works.

The works are part of the Territory-wide Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program (SIHIP) worth $647 million.

The works have already created job and training opportunities for locals with seven Indigenous people employed by SIHIP contractors and a further 35 undertaking civil machinery and related courses.

Ms Macklin visited work sites at Wuppa and Karguru camps where houses are currently being cleared out in readiness for refurbishment.

“I was very pleased to see the refurbishment works,” Ms Macklin said.

“The Australian Government is determined to address the overcrowding in remote Indigenous communities.

“Decent housing is essential for protecting children, improving health, education and employment and rebuilding positive community norms.”
