Korean bomb shockwave registers in Tennant Creek

29 May, 2009 10:16 AM
SHOCKWAVES from North Korea’s nuclear bomb registered in Tennant Creek on Monday.

The seismic station, south east of town, recorded the information about ten minutes after the blast.

The information was relayed to Geoscience Australia where computer-generated email alerts were sent to seismologists within half an hour.

Data from 30 monitoring stations worldwide provided scientists with information tracking the blast to Korea’s known nuclear test site.

The explosion measured 4.56 on the Richter scale.

Proof that the blast was caused by a nuclear bomb will emerge as the fallout, distributed by winds, is measured at monitoring stations.

Following the nuclear bomb test, which was internationally condemned, North Korea test-fired at least six short range missiles.
