Horror crash on Barkly Highway

23 Oct, 2009 09:16 AM
AN international tourist suffered serious spinal injuries following a horror crash near the Barkly Homestead last weekend.

The 28-year-old man was in the back seat of a Holden station wagon which rolled several times when the driver lost control following a tyre blowout.

Fire and Rescue crews used the jaws of life to cut through the roof of the vehicle so ambulance officers could access the injured man.

He was brought to Tennant Creek by ambulance and later medivacced to Alice Springs then on to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The 31-year-old male driver and two women, aged 31 and 23, escaped with minor injuries.

The group, travelling from Queensland, was bound for Tennant Creek when the accident occurred at about 11am on Saturday 40 kilometres west of the Barkly Homestead.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
