History car returns to Tennant Creek

15/08/2008 11:01:00 AM
THE car which was the very first to cross the continent from Adelaide to Darwin returned last weekend as part of its 100 year anniversary journey.

In 1908 Harry Dutton and Murray Aunger travelled in a 25 horse power Clement Talbot motor car - the first self-propelled vehicle ever to be seen by many people in towns and communities along the way.

On its first attempt in 1907 the first car became seriously bogged near Tennant Creek.

The following year, the pair made a second, successful, attempt and arrived in Darwin on 20 August, 51 days after leaving Adelaide.

The Talbot is now the centrepiece of a travelling exhibition which is retracing the original journey.

This time however, the old girl has a free ride on the back of a trailer.

The exhibition was set up in Peko Park last Saturday and Sunday so locals could learn more about the car which ran into all kinds of adventures as it traversed the nation.
