Father rescues family from caravan blaze

18 Sep, 2009 06:37 AM
A FAMILY’S holiday was cut short on Saturday after their caravan burst into flames at Banka Banka Station, about 110 kilometres north of Tennant Creek.

Police say the 35-year-old father filled up the generator with a jerry can between the car and caravan when either vapours or petrol splashed on the exhaust pipe of the car and the caravan caught alight.

The fire spread to a gas bottle and exploded causing a fireball.

The father rescued his 30-year-old wife and two young boys aged three and one who were inside the caravan.

He suffered burns to his legs and arms while the wife escasped with minor injuries. The children were unharmed.

Police say both the car and caravan were destroyed by the intense fire.

Local police, fire and rescue officers, Bootu Creek Mine medical staff and clinic staff attended the scene.

Both parents were taken to Tennant Creek Hospital for treatment. The father was flown to Alice Springs for further treatment but both are now in a stable condition.
