02 Oct, 2009 10:30 AM
WESTERN style horse sports reflect the heritage of the Territory and when country comes to town this weekend that means the Barkly Muster.

The annual Barkly Muster and Goldrush Campdraft represent an NT Government Major Event for Tennant Creek and the region that brings together some of the best exponents of rodeo and campdrafting in a three day show that both exhibits and entertains.

Tennant Creek’s Saddle Horse Club, Turf Club and the Barkly’s Rodeo and Campdraft Associations combine forces each year in October to present the muster and draft that draws competitors and spectators from across the NT and interstate.

In the events six year history the committee strive to add new elements to the program and in 2009 professional cowboys from all over the country enter the arena for an Australian Professional Rodeo Association ‘buck out’ that will rack up the richest prize pool on the Territory circuit this year.

The Power and Water Corporation Youth Rodeo Training School once again will value add to the event with the addition of a horse riding school for both young and old on Sunday afternoon that will surely entertain and provide another family fun part to the program.

The annual Stockman’s Challenge with a $5,000 total prize pool will attract the best in the business while the Goldrush Campdraft being the last draft of the year for the NT always draws the best competitors in the sport for an exciting two day program of industry skills.

Entertainment is the name of the game for spectators and that means Friday night at the Saddle Horse Club for both country rock and cutting under lights where after the skilful displays of managing cattle from horseback you can dance the night away in a great atmosphere of country folk and swing.

Saturday night brings on all the thrills and spills of a rodeo and an after party where the Longtails will rock the crowd into the small hours while tall tales and true of ‘how did I go with him mate,’ will abound from the cowboys that pit their strength and skill against the best bucking stock in the Territory.

The Barkly Muster and Goldrush Campdraft represents an action packed program and community event so make sure you get down to Jubilee Park this weekend to be part of the scene and culture that truly celebrates the Barkly.
